What is
Hydrochlorothiazide ?
Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic (water pill). It decreases the
amount of fluid in the body by increasing the amount of salt and water
lost in the urine.
Hydrochlorothiazide is used to lower blood pressure and
to decrease edema (swelling).
It is a white, or practically white, crystalline powder with a molecular
weight of 297.72, which is slightly soluble in water, but freely soluble
in sodium hydroxide solution.
Hydrochlorothiazide is supplied as 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets for
oral use.
Each tablet contains the following inactive ingredients: calcium
phosphate, FD&C Yellow 6, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate, starch and
talc.
How should this medicine be used?
It comes as a tablet and liquid to take by mouth. It
usually is taken once or twice a day. If you are to take it once a day,
take it in the morning; if you are to take it twice a day, take it in the
morning and in the late afternoon to avoid going to the bathroom during
the night. Take this medication with meals or a snack. Follow the
directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or
pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take
Hydrochlorothiazide exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or
take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Hydrochlorothiazide controls high blood pressure but does not cure it.

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost
